The Research Workshop on “Health Reforms in South East Europe” will take place in Dubrovnik on 24-25 May 2010. It is organized by the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, in collaboration with the London School of Economics and the Andrija Stampar School of Public Health. The workshop will analyse the effects of health reforms on health system performance, in particular with regard to efficiency, effectiveness, and equity. 18 selected papers will be presented at the workshop. Abstracts of suggested papers of no more than 400 words in length should be sent by 31 March 2010.

The European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies is happy to announce that application to the Observatory Venice Summer School 2010 is now open. This event which is jointly organized with the Veneto Region - one of the Observatory’s partners - will take place from 25 to 31 July 2010 on the island of San Servolo in Venice. The theme for this year’s Summer School will be ‘EU integration and health systems: challenges and opportunities for patients, professionals and policy-makers’. It will explore different EU policy fields to identify links with health and assess their impact on health systems.

The Uzbek health system has undergone significant changes since the country became independent in 1991. The establishment of a state-guaranteed benefits package was an important element of health reforms. However, a number of essential services were left out, creating many challenges.

The Observatory is participating in HSR Europe, a project aimed to identify, evaluate and improve the contribution of HSR to the health policy process both at the national and the EU level. One of the major activities will be the organization of a working conference, on 8-9 April 2010.

The Observatory's partner, LSE Health and Social Care has been awarded the prestigious Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education 2009 in the UK. LSE Health and Social Care received the prize for its continuing ability to bridge the gap between research and policy to the advancement of global health and social care policy. Its work is ‘widely and frequently referenced by policy makers and has contributed to raising the quality of evidence-based policy making within government’.
